Data Transfer Protocol: Which One Should You Choose?

When you decide to use a data transfer protocol, for exchanging files between servers and clients, you might be concerned about security. Moreover, you have two options, at this point.

You can choose between File Transfer Protocol (FTP), and SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP). To choose, you should learn more about both of them.

What is Data Transfer Protocol?

The Data Transfer Protocol or File Transfer Protocol (FTP) allows the exchange of files between a server and designated users. In order to work, it uses an IP network and strict communication rules. So, users can transfer the files via a browser or a FTP client.

However, it appeared in 1971 when users were not aware of the online dangers. Although developers solved many security issues, they did not eliminate all the risks.

So, to make these transfers safer, The Internet Engineering Task Force came up with the SFTP. This is the Secure Transfer Protocol, which comes with an encrypted connection.

This one encrypts the information using cryptographic algorithms. As a result, it is more difficult for attackers to access sensitive data.

So, which one should you choose?

As you can already understand, SFTP is more secure. Due to encryption, it is more difficult for hackers to access sensitive information. Moreover, it supports public-key authentication. This means a higher level of protection than passwords offer.

So, when making a choice between these two options, you should mainly think about your needs. While FTP is good for data transfers that do not need protection, in local private networks, SFTP is better for confidential information and documents. This is because it transfers sensitive information securely and encrypted, even while using public networks.

So, if you need to transfer financial, health information, or credentials, this should be the choice. Now, that you know these things, you are able to make an informed decision. And to keep your data safe, of course.
